A Gift Guide Just For You

gift-guides

Who says you can’t give yourself a present once in a while? It doesn’t have to be for Christmas, but I’ve found the best deals can usually be found around this time of year.

While I’m the worst for buying myself anything, I’ve gotten better at pampering myself–especially if I can get it on sale.

I’ve found it’s easier just to let Greg choose for himself and the same goes for me. He wouldn’t have a clue which oil paint I need, or what kind of pressure cooker I wanted.

Gifts for yourself can be anything from a tool to a new sweater. They’re the things you want, but feel too guilty to buy for yourself. Give yourself permission to splurge once in a while. It’s a lesson I learned too late in life, but I’m making up for it now.

Here are some kick-starter ideas.

• Blood pressure machine  Weird? Not really. It could save your life.
• Elite Pressure Cooker  Faithful readers already know I love this machine. Good price for it now too!
• Keurig Coffeemaker  I’m not a coffee drinker, but I’ve bought this twice for the people I love. I am now their favorite person. 🙂
• Apple iPad Air 2  I probably shouldn’t be listing this since Greg has been hinting that his needs to be replaced soon. But if you’re an Apple fan, these are great. I steal Greg’s every chance I get.
• Downton Abbey, how do I love thee? Best damn series ever.

• Gaiam Ball Chair  It doesn’t look like much, but I swear by this if you have nerve or back pain. It’s the only chair I use.
• Simon  I’m not much of a toy person, but I love this game. Good for strengthening your memory too.
• Wireless Security Camera  Easy to set up and gives a lot of peace of mind. We use it to watch the dogs while we’re gone, but it’s also a baby monitor. Includes night vision, motion alert, and two-way audio.
• Weather Station  This is one of those things that gardeners and outdoorsy people can’t live without. I can get more precise information on how to protect my garden and animals than what I get from the weather service.

• Jawa Candy & Card Holder  I have to admit, I was thinking of Sandra Ulbrich Almazan when I saw this. I thought it was adorable.
• Roomba 880  I still love my Roomba. I have not gone back to my old vacuum since. It was the perfect gift to myself.
• Rtic Tumbler  I recommended this to a friend recently. It keeps liquids cold or hot for a very long time and best of all, no condensation.
• Z Zoned Memory Foam Pillow  One of the best things I ever bought for myself. I sleep so much better now.
• White Noise Machine  I am very tempted to get this. It’s had rave reviews. Even with the better bed (and pillow) falling asleep is still hard for me.

• Fitbit  These Fitbits seem to be all the rage. I was shocked at the great reviews and the sheer number of reviews. Maybe I should give this a second look.
• Doctor Who Sonic Screwdriver  If you don’t know what this is, you’re not embracing your inner geek. I happened to be married to a diehard fan. This is one of the things I bought him. Silly, but hey, you only live once.
• Godiva Chocolates  If you’re going to have chocolate, go for the good stuff.
• Business Card Holder  Très chic, y’all.
• Try Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial  If you haven’t tried the free trial, do it over the holidays. We actually use it a lot more than I thought we would.

So eat the last doughnut, get a massage, and buy yourself something nice. From experience, this is the best time to buy most items. Sometimes there are windows when something drops down even further, but you can at least feel assured that retailers will do most anything to get your business.

Attention Authors: On Thursday, December 1st I want to showcase authors (especially indie authors). If you have a book on Amazon, send me the link and genre, and I will include you in a post dedicated to books as gifts. One book per author please. All genres welcome, but no overtly sexy stuff.

If you know me, use my private email address, if you don’t, email me through my contact page. Be sure to put ‘Christmas’ in the subject line and tell me if you’d like to showcase a paperback or the ebook. Feel free to share this post with your author friends too.

Gift Guide for the Animal Lover

gift-guides This week let’s talk about the pet lovers in your life. This gift guide is near and dear to me because I love animal-related gifts.

I try not to buy too many chochkies for my friends because like any decor, it’s very personal. My tastes might not coincide with how they decorate their home, so I go easy on decorative items, but I found lots of other ideas.

• Christmas ornament
• Dog shaped cookie cutter
• Socks! I love getting designer socks. The quirkier, the better.
• Cat Socks
• Cat Butt Magnets. Yes, cat butts.
• Coloring Book.
• Don’t forget to include the gel crayons.
• Leash rack with dog butts.
• Leash rack with dog silhouette.
• Lassie movie collection. Love the one with Roddy McDowell and Elizabeth Taylor!
• Dog Pillow Sham
• Cat Pillow Sham
• UV Flashlight. Great for finding pet stains, scorpions, and dribbles left behind by little boys.
• Pit Bull Cup.  Other breeds available. I love Dean Russo’s art.
• Cat Cup. Design also by Dean Russo
• Door Mat: Dog
• Door Mat: Cat
• Sleeping Pants
• Sleeping Shirt. Yup. That’s my shirt.
• Dog Tarot Cards. I can’t make this up!
• Pet Tote Bags. Over 200 Different Breeds.
• Kitchen Towel. These are a hoot!
• Kitten Door Stop. I think it would make a good paperweight too.
• Cats Welcome
• Chicken Soup for the Dog and Cat Lover’s Soul
• It’s Raining Cats and Dogs: Paper-Pieced Quilts
• The Crazy Cat Lover’s Handbook
• Mark Twain for Cat Lovers (I never knew Twain was such a cat lover.)
• How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You
• The Silence of the Library (I love this cover too)

I’d like a couple of these things myself.

Finally…

A dear friend gave me this frame when my Tanky passed away two years ago. Although it’s not a Christmas gift per se, if you know someone who’s lost someone precious to them around the holidays, you can’t go wrong giving them this.

Not a day goes by that this frame doesn’t make me smile. It’s one of my most favorite gifts.tank-frame

If you’re an animal lover, what kind of gifts would you like?

Do You Like Your Gifts Practical or Fanciful?

compost-metal-bin-sm

With Christmas coming up I’ve been in full radar mode trying to find the perfect gifts for the friends and family on my list. I generally divide people by whether they prefer practical or fanciful gifts. It helps to narrow down my choices for each person.

One of my all time favorite gifts was a kitchen compost bin. Yes. A compost bin. I was bowled over because I had never told anyone I wanted one. I used to eye them wistfully on my Amazon wish list.

I know. It doesn’t take much to excite me. 😀

No one believes me, but I really do prefer practical gifts, and for really practical reasons. If I can use it, it’ll never be a wasted gift.

Greg is my polar opposite. Give him toys any day of the week, especially expensive big boy toys. (Please note huge groan of aggravation.) At least it’s easy to buy for him–if I can afford it.

In true form, he in turn always bought me expensive gifts that he felt any woman of taste might like. It took a few years before he realized that jewelry and clothes were not my personal delights. Although he can never go wrong with a new dog! It’s my Achilles heel, though we both know that whatever pets we get now may be our last ones, so we’re more careful about choosing a candidate.

My mother used to load us down with decorative items that she loved, thinking I would love them too. We do not have the same tastes in decor. Far from it. Eventually I was able to convince her not to buy us gifts.

Taste is very subjective. I can only think of two good friends whose tastes are impeccable. I love going to their homes. Their decor is elegant without being ostentatious. My tastes run on the traditional side with a slight bend to the eclectic. If either of these two friends bought me something decorative I know it would be something I would love.

But on the flip side I would be hesitant to buy anything decorative for someone else. I would hate to buy something that would go unloved, or worse, regifted. I don’t mind spending money on gifts my friends and family would love, but I’d hate to think it was wasted on something that will end up in their closets.

Although Greg and I don’t exchange Christmas gifts anymore, we still give each other gifts for no reason at all. It’s kind of fun to give something when nothing is expected.

What about you? Do you prefer practical or fun gifts? What do you like to give to your significant other? Is there anything on your wish list this year?

Father’s Day Gifts for All Kinds of Dads

I don’t believe you have to have regular, old children to be a dad. Greg’s a dog dad. Best dog dad ever as his kids will attest with a woof. If you know a dad like this, get him this shirt. It’s perfect!

If your guy is like my guy, he wants big boy TOYS. (Cue my groan here.) I can’t begin to list all the toys Greg has either bought for himself or been given but I’m sure it was more than some countries’ gross national income.

One of his favorite toys of late has been a drone (with camera). They’re quite cool actually, and the video feed has great resolution, but the techy lovers  probably get a bigger kick out of them than I do.  If you’re at a loss for a different kind of toy for your best dad, a drone is a good choice.

I felt bad for my dad. We used to give him terrible gifts. Poor guy. We gave him the gifts kids back then gave their dads. For us, it was handkerchiefs and bow ties. (He wore bow ties!)

I’m sure he’d rather have had books. He read a lot. To teach himself English, he read comic books because he could follow along with the pictures, but in his native language, he liked to read novels and historical accounts of famous people.

Even when I got older, he was hard to shop for gifts. He was content with whatever he had. He had lived through the Depression, so anything he had was like a gift to him. I think I learned my frugal ways from him.

My dad died of pancreatic cancer in 2001. In the weeks leading up to his death he regaled us with stories (he was a great storyteller) and memories.  Looking back, I think he was trying to recall every good moment in his life and pass them on to us. His body might die, but his memories and stories will live on. I know I’ll never forget.

While dads (and dog dads) generally get the low end of the stick compared to moms on Mother’s Day, remember that they could use some fussing too. I try to pick things around their hobbies…or is that vices?

Here are some other ideas for dads.

Sporting event tickets or paraphernalia: You’ll know if he has a favorite sports team. Guys never keep that a secret.

Life experience gift: I once gave Greg some flight time in a helicopter. We couldn’t afford the lessons, but at least I could give him a taste of it.

Electronics: If he doesn’t yet have a tablet, there’s a perfect gift. Greg doesn’t go anywhere without his.

Liquor: I never saw a man turn down alcohol. Find out what his favorite is then buy the good stuff.

Clean his car. Get the kids to do this for him as a gift.

Professional massage. There are lots of places to try. Some might have Father’s Day specials too.

Gardening supplies: Man or woman, father, mother, aunt, or uncle, if your favorite person is a gardener, he’ll always appreciate quality tools–or plants for his garden.

Food: What man doesn’t like to eat good food? Whether you make it yourself, use a specialty service, or take him to an extra special restaurant, he’ll know he’s being treated like a king.

Are you doing anything special for your favorite guy?

On another note, I noticed that Amazon has DROPPED the price for the Roomba 880. This is definitely the lowest price I’ve seen, and I’ve been keeping track. This offer ends in a few days, so if you’ve been on the fence about this machine, get it now.

Update on my Roomba review. I still love this thing. It has a couple of quirks but I think it has more to do with my house than it. For example, it stopped once in the middle of cleaning. We don’t know why, but we clicked the button again and it finished its job. We suspect it got confused between the different levels of floor. It only happened that one time though.

The biggest reason I’m still happy with it is that Iko has been shedding like crazy but my floors are still clean. His undercoat is very fine fur, the kind that likes to float in the air. I run that machine twice a day sometimes and it’s been great at picking up all that hair. It’s been a lot of fur too. Iko has been the real test on the Roomba’s ability.

June is the Month for New Beginnings: A Gift Guide

I think the most exciting part of my life has always been when I start something new, and what’s newer than setting up your very first home? It doesn’t matter if you’re a college student, newlyweds, or just someone starting over. It’s exhilarating, daunting, and slightly scary.

I had already picked out my apartment when Greg had asked me to marry him. That set us on a whole different path than the one I had planned. Like most newlyweds we had so little. I had invested my entire fortune on a new bedroom suite. In hindsight it was a good investment. We had it for 30 years before we sold it–and it was still in great shape.

We were already married two years before we bought another stick of furniture, relying instead on a huge cardboard box for a dining table and two industrial cardboard drums for chairs.  Good times!

My mother had bought me a set of pots and pans. Someone else gave us a set of towels. But the kitchen supplies came from what little cash I could scrape together. To this day, if I buy newlyweds a present, I almost always include a laundry bin filled with pantry supplies and cooking utensils. It’s what gave me the most pride when I was young because they made me feel like an adult–a self-sufficient adult no longer attached to mom’s apron strings.

With June coming up, it reminds me of weddings, college, and college graduates. Here are my picks for great gifts.

It all depends on how well you know the person, but if they’re starting from nothing, you can be assured, they’ll need everything.

Kitchen:
• Pots and pans: Depending on their situation and cooking ability, you can either buy a cheap set that will last them a couple of years, or a great set that could last a lifetime.

Storage containers: Glass, please. Let’s try to reduce our dependence on plastic.

• Pantry staples: I use a laundry bin, but you can do something smaller like a stock pot filled with spices, a sturdy set of cooking utensils, and a set of silicone oven mitts.
I have one of these silicone mitts and plan on getting one more. They are far better than the old quilted ones. No heat transfer at all!

Another idea would be to get a large pasta bowl and fill it with all the ingredients necessary to make a grand pasta dinner, including the pricey olive oil and fresh garlic.

• Kitchen Towels: Towels might seem a cheap gift, but boy, are they useful. I bought this particular set for myself. They’re good, absorbent bar towels.

• Food: You can’t go wrong with food. In a large brown bag, fill it to the brim with canned goods, spices, pastas, flour, sugar, and rice. A nice gift certificate to a grocery store will allow them to buy fresh meat and vegetables.  When we were starting out, food was a luxury, I kid you not. I know a hundred ways to stretch a chicken. LOL!

Living Room
• Throw pillows, bedspreads, and hooked rugs: If you’re handy, you can make these. My mother was always making me throw pillows, curtains, and comforters. They weren’t just gifts from the heart, but keepsakes. When deciding on a gift, don’t discount your innate talents. I still have the handmade gifts I was given.

Entertainment: Books, DVDs (though most young people seem to prefer to stream), or restaurant gift cards. Theater tickets are great gifts too.

• Streaming subscription:
Most people already have televisions or a laptop, but they might not be able to afford Netflix or Amazon Prime, so a year’s subscription is a nice perk.

Bedroom/bathroom
Linen: If you know the size of their bed, give them a quality set of sheets. If not, a set of thick bath towels are just as nice.
Clock: Mundane maybe, but there are some clocks with clever assets, like the kind that recharge your cell phones.

Other stuff: I mentioned streaming, but don’t forget other subscriptions, like magazines, or Amazon Prime for shopping. College students get a special discount for Prime. Join Amazon Student FREE Two-Day Shipping for College Students

Fire Extinguisher: I will admit, this is a boring gift, so be sure to make this an add-on to your ‘other’ gift. This is something people starting out NEVER buy for themselves. No one expects to have a fire which is why no one seems to have a fire extinguisher. If you’ve ever lived through a house fire, you’ll know what I mean. It could mean the difference between losing a kitchen and losing an entire home–or worse.

Plants: Okay, I’ll admit this is something I basil plantwould’ve wanted. Even if they don’t have any dirt to call their own, a potted plant is a sweet gift and costs very little. You might be turning someone into a future gardener, and then you can send them to me so we can talk about tomatoes and geraniums. 🙂

If you’d like more gift ideas, check out this post and this one.

I get sentimental with young people starting out. Although cash is always appreciated, I still remember the “little things” I was given back when I had nothing. They’re precious to me.

*****

How did you start out? I hope you did better than the cardboard box we had. I have to laugh about our “dining room table” but it really wasn’t so bad.

What was your favorite gift when you got married or first left home?
